An Informational Website - Step by Step instructions.
Building a profitable informational website is straight forward, and
I'll provide you with step by step instructions on how to go about it.
Making money online is definitely doable...but it does take time, and
it does take real work, at least most of the time. If you are an
expert in some field of endeavor and there are real people who search
for that type of information on the web then your job won't be to
difficult. If however, you are not in such a position, you can
still do it, but it will take more work on your part. You will
need to do a lot more research and perhaps learning, but you can still
successfully earn money with an informational website.
It's generally not quick. It takes time to put the site
together. It takes more time for the search engine spiders to find your
site. After that it takes time for the engines to index your site.
Sometimes lots of time. One way search engines determine the
importance of web sites is by how many and what type of links point to
the site. Again, building up a good set of backlinks from other sites
takes time.
There are shortcuts to getting traffic quickly, like using
Pay-Per-Click and offline advertising, but you will need a very good and
sought after subject material to make purchasing website traffic
worthwhile.
A word about SEO...
The search engines are getting very smart. The search engine's
job is to find the information that your are searching for, and present
it to you. You are a human. The search engines are doing
their best to make sure they present you with websites that are
"human friendly", and have the information you are looking for.
Don't try to fool them. Make your website very easy for humans
to find what they are looking for, and provide them with top quality
content. Make sure it is content that real people are searching for.
If you do that, then over the long term you will be successful.
I'm not saying you do not need to do search engine optimization on
your site, in fact you do, but first and foremost make sure it's built
for humans. Another thing you do not want to do is to over
optimize your site. The search engines are getting too smart, and
if they see what looks like "perfect optimization" they may well
penalize you.
Choosing a subject
You may already know your subject if for example you are an expert in
an existing niche, or you may have no idea. This is where you take
one of your most important steps, the first step I suppose. You
must find out if your subject is sought after, or find one that is both
sought after and acceptable to you for the subject of your site.
There are methods you can use to find out! Isn't that good news.
There are key word research tools that you can use to find out what
people are actually searching for. For more about the keyword
research go to keyword phrases area of
my site.
Basically, if large numbers of people search for the information you
can provide, then you have something to work with. If no one
searches for the subject you are interested in, then move on to another.
Picking a Domain Name
There are those who feel that your keywords must be in the domain
name, or at least that they will provide you with a boost when it comes
to the search engine rankings. It they do it sure isn't much.
In my opinion it is more important to have a domain name that is easy to
remember and still related somewhat to the subject material.
If you search online for domain names you will find no shortage of
registrars where you can obtain domain names and do searches to see what
names are available. Find one and purchase it. Prices range
from $5.00 per year to $50.00 per year. Obviously you don't want to pay
the $50.00 per year price.
