What kind of website to build?

Well there are all kinds of websites that could be used to turn a profit.  Here are a few examples:

Retail Sites

You could build a website to sell a physical product online.  I have such a site, chilipepperapp.com.  My product is one that I came up with myself and I manufacture it and market it on the web.  However, you can sell things that you don't make yourself.   There are thousands of things you could retail online.

Another hot item for online marketing is information.  For instance, you could write a book and sell it as an downloadable e-book.  you could sell e-books written by other authors, etc.

Affiliate Sites

One of the better known affiliate programs is the one instituted by Amazon.  You build a site about a particular subject, then enroll in the Amazon  affiliate program.  You then provide links from your site to certain books on the Amazon site, books that are related to the your site's content. Amazon uses special software that tracks who sends each visitor. If the visitor buys a book, (or anything else for that mater), Amazon pays you a commission.

Affiliate programs are available for everything from clothing to water heaters.  For more details about affiliate web sites see my affiliates web site page.  My Chilipepper site has an affiliate program for other sites to sell my product, and I've got sites where I belong to other affiliate sites such as amazon.com and Commission Junction.  To see my Chilipepper affiliate program click here.

Informational web sites

Informational web sites are ones like this one your are visiting now.  You provide useful information that people are looking for, and then place advertising on your pages.  Google's adsense program is a good one for this. Informational sites are my personal favorite, because once I get the site up, there is nothing else to do.  I just cash the checks when they come in every month.  No messing around with credit cards, customers, returns, etc.

Needless to say, informational sites cover a broad range of possibilities.  Do-it-yourself sites informing your visitors how to accomplish some task such as remodeling a bathroom, or how to fix a lawn mower etc.  How about fishing and or hunting?  Racing cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes might be good, or how about roller blading or snow skiing.  One of my sites is about taking ocean cruises...and it's not doing badly.

These have been just a few ideas.  Get creative and pick a subject.

Once you've decided upon an idea or subject for your website you will want to find out a few things before you actually build the site.  For instance, if it is a retail site, what product should you promote?  Is there a market for the product?  Are people looking for the product online?  If it is an informational site, can you get traffic to the site?  If you are going to use advertising to generate revenue, are there advertisers willing to pay for ads on your site?

I will of course, be covering these issues in the coming pages, so keep reading.  :)
